Power Rankings
Diego Maradona, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane - some of the greatest players in history have won the Golden Ball. But who will pick up this year's prize? Two former winners will be present at the tournament in 2022, of course, with Lionel Messi again leading Argentina and Luka Modric captaining Croatia. But could the prize go to one of the young guns, such as Kylian Mbappe, or even England's Jude Bellingham? Below, GOAL runs through all of the leading contenders in this year's power rankings…
Team Guides
Qatar
Tournament hosts Qatar are appearing at their first ever World Cup and will be desperate to put on a show and put themselves in contention to advance from Group A. Winners of the AFC Asian Cup in 2019, where they beat Japan in the final, they also finished third in the FIFA Arab Cup in 2021. With a squad comprising of players that all play their football domestically, Qatar will be hoping to show the world they're not just there to make up the numbers.
Coach
Born in Barcelona, Felix Sanchez was a youth coach with the Liga giants for 10 years before moving to Qatar. He won the AFC U-19 championship in 2014 and was appointed head coach of the full men's national team in 2017 after three years with the U-23 side. His success at the AFC Asian Cup in 2019 saw him rewarded with a new contract to take him through to the World Cup and the tournament will give him and his players an opportunity to show the world what they can do.
Predicted XI
Qatar's main one to watch is forward Akram Afif. He has played in Spain's top flight for Sporting Gijon and scored 26 goals in just 22 league games for Al Sadd in 2018-19. Almoez Ali is another goal threat for the host nation, and was the top scorer at the Asia Cup in 2019, while experienced left-back Abdelkarim Hassan won the Asian Footballer of the Year award in 2018.
Fixtures
Scoring a goal at their first appearance at a World Cup would spark jubilant scenes in Qatar, and that will surely be the aim to begin with. If they can deliver a win, in a group alongside Netherlands, Senegal and Ecuador, it would be a special moment - advance to the knockout stages and it really would be a significant achievement. They are, however, expected to struggle in Group A, even with the home support behind them.

England
Semi-finalists at Russia 2018, runners-up at Euro 2020, winners of Qatar 2022? England certainly looked like one of the favourites earlier this year but now doubt has set in. The Three Lions have failed to win any of their past six games and there is mounting concern - and evidence - that Gareth Southgate is too conservative a manager to get the best out of one of the most talented group of players the nation has never seen.
Coach
Overall, Southgate has done a fine job since taking over in difficult circumstances in 2016. Indeed, the statistics show that he is England's most successful manager since Alf Ramsey. However, there are question marks over his tactics, with his critics arguing that his preferred 3-4-3 formation, with two defensive midfielders stationed in front of the backline, is too conservative, and fails to make full use of the vast array of attacking talents he has at his disposal.
Predicted XI
Harry Kane will be eyeing a repeat of 2018, when he claimed the Golden Boot after running amok against weak opposition in the group stage, while Phil Foden should prove himself one of the best young players on the planet - if Southgate selects him ahead of the more defensively minded Mason Mount of course. England's key man, though, could be teenage sensation Jude Bellingham, the prodigiously gifted, all-action Borussia Dortmund midfielder who has already taken the Champions League by storm.
Fixtures
Lowered considerably after a disastrous Nations League campaign which featured home-and-away losses to Hungary, including a humiliating 4-0 humbling at Molineux which ended with some fans calling for Southgate to be sacked. Still, he retains the full support of not only the FA but also his players, who produced a stirring comeback in 3-3 draw with Germany. It's also worth noting that England once again have a very favourable draw and should easily make the quarter-finals. They have the talent to go further but Southgate's loyalty to certain underperforming senior stars, including Harry Maguire, could undermine their hopes of going all the way in Qatar.

Jude Bellingham
Bellingham has been an absolute revelation in the Bundesliga following his move to Borussia Dortmund and there's no looking past him for England any more. The BVB star offers something few others do with his energy both on and off the ball and has a habit of popping up in the right position at key moments.
Phil Foden
The Manchester City ace has taken the step from promising youngster to bone fide superstar under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola and will be raring to show what he can with the national team as well. Foden is a joy to watch with the ball at his feet and his incisive runs and clever movement give England something extra in the final third.
Harry Kane
Kane was crowned top goal scorer at the 2018 World Cup and he will be determined to show the world that was not a one-off. The Spurs star is England's undisputed No.9 and remains one of the best finishers around in the game.
Argentina
After their Copa America triumph in 2021, Argentina clinched the Finalissima 2022 trophy by beating Italy and are among the favourites to lift the World Cup come December. Lionel Scaloni overcame early doubts over his credentials as a rookie coach to form a team working impressively as a unit and Lionel Messi is in good form for what some are claiming to be the best Argentina side of his career.
Coach
Lionel Scaloni was first promoted from the U20 side on an interim basis and was viewed back home as an underwhelming appointment as a cash-strapped AFA ended their fruitless search for a more high-profile appointment. The former West Ham and Lazio defender has certainly won over any sceptics, however, leading his side to Copa America success and arriving in Qatar undefeated in 35 outings.
Predicted XI
All eyes will be on Lionel Messi in what could well be his last chance to cap an astonishing career with the one title that has eluded him. A veteran Angel Di Maria should have a big role to play, as will Rodrigo De Paul who will look to knit things together in midfield and protect a backline susceptible to pacy counter attacks.
Fixtures
Anything but winning the trophy will be considered a disappointment for Argentina, even if they are well aware of the fact that they probably don't have the strongest team. It's Messi's final chance to lift the coveted trophy, though, so bringing home the World Cup for the first time since 1986 is the only outcome that will please the entire country.

Lautaro Martínez
With Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero hanging up their boots, Inter forward Martinez finally kickstarted his international career after being promoted to a starting role under Scaloni. Most importantly, Martinez has formed an impressive on-field understanding with Messi and his fortunes in front of goal will be vital to Argentina’s hopes in Qatar.
Lionel Messi
Captain and talisman Messi evolved into a bonafide captain in recent years, finding his voice and leading the Albiceleste by in more than just setting the on-field standard. The PSG man has been at the heart of Scaloni’s rebuild that saw them end a 28-year wait for a major title with Copa America success in Brazil last year.
Leandro Paredes
The midfielder will be tasked with playing the first forward pass for his side when in possession - one which for over a decade has been key to Argentina keeping Messi high up the field and receiving the ball on the front foot. A former playmaking no.10, he's added drive and bite to his game since arriving in Europe eight years ago and will be key to the balance of a side that has looked equally solid and expansive.
France
World Cup holders France will be one of the favourites heading into the tournament in Qatar despite some inconsistent form in 2022 that has seen them win just three of their last eight games. In Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema they possess two of the world's best players and they should breeze through Group D.
Coach
Didier Deschamps is under contract with Les Bleus until the completion of the World Cup and will know that a poor performance in Qatar would likely lead to his departure. The captain from the 1998 team also guided his side to success in Russia at the 2018 World Cup - and won the Nations League after that - and whatever the outcome this winter, he will go down as a legendary figure in the history of French football.
Predicted XI
All eyes will be on Kylian Mbappe, especially given all the speculation surrounding his future at PSG. The hope is that he will light up the World Cup, with his combination with Karim Benzema likely to be decisive in Qatar. Much will also be expected of Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni, who is set to replace the injured N'Golo Kante in midfield.
Fixtures
1998, 2018, 2022? France will be setting the bar high in terms of their expectations in Qatar and anything less than a deep run into the knockout stages will be seen as a failure. The two-time winners have an enviable array of options across all positions and they will be expected to perform.

Players Deep Dive
Karim Benzema
Arguably the best player in the world during the 2021-22 campaign and he now gets the chance to cap off a fine season by winning the biggest trophy of all. Benzema is by no means France's only dangerous attacker, but few players have been able to match him over these last 18 months or so.
Antoine Griezmann
Griezmann has rediscovered his best form at the perfect time and also has a history of delivering for France, with 42 goals scored across 110 games. If he can co-exist with Mbappe AND Benzema this time around, don't bet against Les Bleus defending their crown.
Raphaël Varane
Varane was the backbone of France's 2018 World Cup success as he shielded Lloris while also kickstarting attacks by driving out of the defence like a Rolls Royce. The 29-year-old is facing a race against time to be fully fit for Qatar, but Deschamps can ill-afford not to take him after his imperious start to the 2022-23 season.
Spain
Following their disappointing last-16 exit in 2018, Spain have been rebuilding over the past four years under Luis Enrique, with the signs good that the 2010 champions are on the cusp of returning to their former glories. They reached the semi-finals at Euro 2020 with a young team who play an exciting brand of football, and though they are not without their flaws, there is no reason for them not to be among the favourites to go all the way in Qatar. Scoring goals is likely to be their main issue, but they have the creative players to at least produce enough chances against even the best sides.
Coach
A treble-winner with Barcelona, Luis Enrique is regarded as one of the brightest coaches in the international game today, and his results in charge of Spain have largely been positive. He is not afraid to rotate heavily from game to game, and has handed out debuts and call-ups to a host of young, in-form players in lieu of picking more experienced heads. That has led to some fans - particularly those of a Real Madrid persuasion - criticising his methods, but for the most part they are working.
Predicted XI
The breakout star of Euro 2020, Pedri will be expected to confirm himself among the world’s best midfielders in Qatar, despite the fact that the Barcelona man will still only be 19 when the tournament kicks off. He will be joined in midfield by fellow Barca teenager Gavi - himself only 18 - for what many Spain fans hope will be the first major finals of many that the pair are able to run the show in. The much-maligned Alvaro Morata, meanwhile, is out to prove that he remains one of Europe’s most underrated strikers, even if his finishing is not always up to scratch.
Fixtures
Being drawn into a group alongside Germany does mean that Spain will enter the tournament with some immediate jeopardy to overcome. Regardless, the expectation back home will be to at least match their run to the final four from the Euros, with winning the whole competition certainly not out of the question. To do that, they may well need to top their group, and so a slow start will not be acceptable.

Álvaro Morata
Morata might not quite have become the high-profile striker that some expected him to become when he first came through at Real Madrid, but he remains a force to be reckoned with up top and is arguably Spain's biggest attacking threat as they prepare to regain their World Cup crown. There's a reason why he's among the Furia Roja's top 10 all-time top goal scorers.
Pedri
Pedri is not just the future of Spanish football, but he's also the present. The Barcelona midfielder has rapidly developed into one of the world's most promising youngsters and will be relishing the chance to show the world what he's capable of.
Rodri
Perhaps the best holding midfielder in world football right now, Rodri has developed into the ideal Sergio Busquets successor for Spain. Having come on leaps and bounds under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Rodri can now be relied upon to provide the ideal defensive shield while also contributing in attack, either from set-pieces or with wicked long-range shots.
Belgium
The Red Devils went into the 2018 edition as one of the favourites, but crashed out in the semi-finals at the hands of eventual winners France. A semi-final appearance would probably be qualified as a success this time around, though, as Belgium are little more than outsiders to go all the way.
Coach
Roberto Martinez has been in charge of Belgium since 2016, but the jury is still out on whether he's been a success or not. He helped them rise to the top of the Fifa Rankings, but has failed to deliver any trophies with what many have described as Belgium's greatest-ever generation. Another underwhelming performance at a major tournament might very well mean the end of the road for him.
Predicted XI
It's all about Belgium's star trio of Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku. De Bruyne is arguably one of the best midfielders in the world and will be desperate to take his Manchester City form with him to Qatar. Hazard has been strugglng to get regular playing time at Real Madrid, but remains a key figure for the national team, while Lukaku is his country's all-time top scorer for a reason.
Fixtures
This might very well be the last chance to lift a trophy for Belgium's much-celebrated golden generation. They cruised through the qualifiers, but were unimpressive in their Uefa Nations League campaign as they suffered a heavy defeat against Netherlands. They still have plenty of high-profile names in their squad, but one can't help but feel Belgium's current crop of players are past their peak.

Kevin De Bruyne
The Manchester City midfielder is the brain of this Belgium side and their chances of going far will heavily rely on De Bruyne's form. He will be playing in a slightly more advanced role for Belgium than he usually takes up for City, so he could very well chime in with a few goals of his own on top of the inevitable stream of assists.
Eden Hazard
Eden Hazard has not been particularly enjoying himself at club level since joining Real Madrid, but he remains a key figure for Belgium. The gifted winger is unstoppable with the ball at his feet on his day and will be relishing the chance to team up with the likes of Lukaku and De Bruyne up front.
Romelu Lukaku
Belgium's all-time top goalscorer might not have enjoyed life much at Chelsea last season, but his return to Inter has also brought back the smile on his face. And a happy Lukaku is a dangerous Lukaku. The prolific striker remains a force to be reckoned with physically and his natural instincts in front of goal means he should be among the main candidates to win the Golden Boot.
Brazil
Whisper it quietly, but this might be the best Brazil have looked heading into a tournament for many years. There is a ludicrous amount of competition for places up front, as there often is, but more importantly Tite seems to have found a nice balance to his side. Brazil have only lost once in the past two calendar years - a defeat to eternal rivals Argentina in the 2021 Copa America final.
Coach
Tite has been derided for being too defensive at times, but his methods have been pretty successful so far - Copa America heartbreak aside. Criticism has also been leveled for some interesting recent call-ups, with the three Gabriels - Jesus, Martinelli and Magalhaes, as well as Dani Alves being omitted from the final warm-up squad. Regardless of what happens, Tite has already confirmed he will be leaving after the tournament.
Predicted XI
Where shall we start? Vinicius Junior looks ready to take the world by the storm after an excellent 12 months at Real Madrid, while Casemiro might just be the best defensive midfielder at the tournament. Neymar is still the cream of the crop, though, with the divisive forward beginning the season in red-hot form for PSG. He isn’t getting any younger and will be desperate to banish the ghosts of 2014 and 2018.
Fixtures
Win. It’s as simple as that. Brazil have now endured two decades of hurt in the World Cup and the media back home are ramping up expectations on this side. They’ve been handed a very kind group too, and should have plenty of momentum heading into the knockout stages. Things look good.

Marquinhos
Brazil are blessed with riches of talent going forward, but they will also need to be rock solid at the back to lift the trophy in Qatar. Step forward PSG star Marquinhos, who is the perfect foil for Thiago Silva in the heart of the defence, and will be called upon to do much of Brazil's legwork as they try to land a first World Cup since 2002.
Neymar Jr.
Neymar doesn't really need much of an introduction. The PSG star is arguably one of the greatest Brazilian players ever and will likely be crowned as their all-time leading goal scorer during the tournament in Qatar. He has previously hinted at retiring from international duty after the 2022 World Cup and he will be desperate to end his Brazil spell on a high.
Raphinha
Raphinha earned a big-money move to Barcelona after two seasons at Leeds, where he proved himself as one of the most exciting wingers in European football. The 25-year-old hasn't made the best start to life at Camp Nou, but should reach his top level alongside Neymar and Richarlison in Tite's attack.
Portugal
While it may not be a case of 'now or never' for Portugal's golden generation, it almost certainly is for Cristiano Ronaldo. The big question ahead of the tournament is whether he will even start. With a squad packed full of talent and a number of their rivals in middling form, Qatar represents a huge opportunity for the Selecao to end their long wait to win a World Cup. Their best-ever showing - a third-place finish - came way back in 1966, and they will be targeting the semi-finals as a minimum. The main concern will be their own indifferent form in the build-up, but they should surely still be counted among the favourites.
Coach
Fernando Santos' legacy is secure following the Euro 2016 and 2019 Nations League triumphs, but following disappointing showings at both the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020 his days could be numbered if Portugal do not fulfil their potential in Qatar. He is under intense scrutiny for his undying faith in the out-of-form Ronaldo, but it is difficult to imagine him being swayed at this late stage.
Predicted XI
All eyes will inevitably be on Ronaldo, but if Santos does make a big selection decision then it will be up to Premier League stars Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes to carry Portuguese hopes. Younger talents Rafael Leao and Joao Felix will feel they are also deserving of an opportunity, with the former in absolutely dazzling form as the tournament approaches. Don't forget 'defenders' Joao Cancelo and Nuno Mendes, too. There are very few more exciting full-backs to watch in the game right now.
Fixtures
Given the quality at their disposal, Portugal will be hoping to match or better their best-ever finish at the very least. However, like many of their European rivals, their form has been indifferent in the build-up to Qatar and a number of the performances workmanlike - despite the undoubted and technical quality of so many of their players as individuals. The hope will be that things will click on the world's biggest stage.

Players Deep Dive
Bruno Fernandes
Bruno Fernandes adds a layer of creativity to Portugal's midfield that makes them an incredibly dangerous team going forward. The Manchester United man's goals and assists will be crucial if Portugal are to go far in Qatar.
Cristiano Ronaldo
One of the greatest players in the history of the game in what will be his last shot at World Cup glory can only mean fireworks. It's not quite been his season so far at club level, but Cristiano Ronaldo will be determined to show the world what he can do at the biggest stage of all one last time.
Bernardo Silva
The Manchester City star has been in stellar form at club level and can make a difference both in midfield or in a free role in attack. Bernardo Silva on top of his game is something else and opponents cannot afford to let him out of their sights if they have any hopes of getting a result against the Portuguese.
Ecuador
Casual football fans may have been surprised to see Ecuador finish fourth in the CONMEBOL qualification standings, above the likes of Peru, Colombia and Chile, but they have long been considered a coming force in South America. Indeed, this is a relatively young and defensively sound side that is difficult to beat.
Coach
Gustavo Alfaro took over 30 days before Ecuador's opening qualifier against Argentina and discovered that a disturbing amount of players had lost interest in playing for the struggling and divided national team. The Argentine quickly revived the squad, both with his motivational skills and his shrewd decision to put his faith in several members of the Under-20s. The net result was the youngest panel in CONMEBOL qualifying holding both Argentina and Brazil to draws at home, as well as routing Colombia 6-1.
Predicted XI
Moises Caicedo was given his international debut in Alfaro's first game, a 1-0 loss to Argentino in Buenos Aires, and the midfielder is the undoubted pick of Ecuador's exciting crop of youngsters. Indeed, after making a massive impact at Brighton, whom he joined last year, the 20-year-old is widely expected to move to one of the Premier League's top teams next summer. Pervis Estupinan, meanwhile, has only just arrived at Brighton and has yet to nail down a regular place, but the left-back has established himself as a key man for his country. However, Ecuador's hopes hinge upon Enner Valencia. He's not just the skipper, he's also his country's all-time leading scorer. Shot-shy Ecuador desperately need Valencia to carry over his fine form at Fenerbahce this season if they are to make it out of their group.
Fixtures
The draw has undoubtedly boosted their hopes of at least matching their best-ever showing at the finals: a last-16 appearance in 2006. Obviously, everything hinges on the tournament-opening clash with Qatar. Hit the ground running by beating the hosts and Ecuador might well be capable of taking points off the Netherlands and/or Senegal. This, after all, is a team that hasn't conceded a goal in its past five matches. However, the big concern is the lack of goals, and it's also worth pointing out that nearly all of Ecuador's best results in qualifying came in Quito, which is nearly 3,000 metres above sea level...

Iran
Iran booked their ticket for the 2022 World Cup without any noteworthy issues, finishing first in their group ahead of South Korea and UAE. There's plenty of individual talent in attack and their disciplined approach off the ball could see them spring a surprise against more-fancied opponents such as England.
Coach
Carlos Queiroz is without a doubt one of the most experienced coaches around at the World Cup and he has shown time and time again that he has that rare ability to get the best out of his players. He previously managed Iran at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, before leaving to take charge of first Colombia and then Egypt. He couldn't say no when Iran came knocking again in September, though, and is now in charge of his third World Cup with Team Melli.
Predicted XI
Mehdi Taremi is Iran's undisputed star player and the Porto man has been in fine form both domestically and in the Champions League in 2022-23. There's far more to the Iranian attack, though, with Serdar Azmoun and Karim Ansarifard set to complete their dangerous front-three.
Fixtures
Iran have never made it out of the group stages at the World Cup, so doing so this time around would be considered a big success. They came close in 2018 with four points from three games and will be aiming to do even better in Qatar.

Saudi Arabia
Appearing at their sixth World Cup, Saudi Arabia topped both of their AFC qualifying groups and only lost one game in 18 during that run. Herve Renard's side don't tend to concede many goals and, despite being unfancied to make it through to the knockout stages, they will relish the opportunity to cause an upset.
Coach
Frenchman Herve Renard has been in charge of the Saudi Arabia national team since 2019, after leaving Morocco following a disappointing AFCON finals performance. He has, however, won that tournament twice before, with Zambia and Ivory Coast respectively, and has delivered more wins for Saudi Arabia than any other foreign manager.
Predicted XI
Centre-back duo Abdulelah Al-Amri and Ali Al-Bulaihi are likely to have pivotal roles to play for Saudi Arabia at the World Cup, especially if they're going to pick up any points. First-choice goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais will be responsible for providing the last line of defence and if he has a strong tournament, the Saudis certainly won't be disgraced in Qatar.
Fixtures
After reaching the round of 16 in 1994, Saudi Arabia haven't made it out of the group stage in their subsequent four appearances at World Cups. They will be desperate to change that in Qatar, although a difficult group awaits them, with Argentina, Poland and Mexico their opponents. A win, like they managed against Egypt in 2018, would certainly be greeted with jubilation back home.

Australia
Australia qualified the hard way, with a third-place finish in the second group stage plunging them into the play-offs. After squeezing past UAE, they beat Peru on penalties to book their place in Qatar - with goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne going viral thanks to his gloriously bonkers goalline antics in the shootout.
Coach
After stints as caretaker, assistant and Under-23 manager, Graham Arnold was finally handed the top job in Australian football back in 2018. His first major tournament was a disaster, with the Socceroos crashing out of the 2019 Asian Cup at the quarter-final stage. The mood was pretty hostile before their miraculous qualification, and a poor performance in Qatar could see him dismissed.
Predicted XI
This Australian side lacks a bonafide star in the mold of Tim Cahill or Harry Kewell, but they are not entirely without talent. Mathew Ryan remains a solid goalkeeper, while Aaron Mooy’s pinpoint delivery will be key as his side looks to maximise their set-piece opportunities. The vastly-experienced Matthew Leckie will be their main source of goals
Fixtures
Australia have been placed in a tough group alongside France, Denmark and Tunisia, meaning their chances of progression are slim. They’ll be hoping for a French meltdown, but realistically no one is expecting them to pull up any trees. Scoring a few goals would be nice.

Costa Rica
Costa Rica missed out on automatic qualification on goal difference to the United State. Fortunately, they beat New Zealand in an intercontinental playoff to seal their spot in Qatar. It is the first time the team has qualified for three successive World Cups and their sixth tournament in total.
Coach
Costa Rica have had four managers since Oscar Ramirez was axed following the last World Cup. Currently in the ejector seat is Colombian Luis Fernandez Suarez, who has previously excelled in tournament football. In 2006, he led Ecuador to the second round in Germany, leading them to group-stage victories over Poland and, ironically, Costa Rica.
Predicted XI
He may be 35 and he may have been ousted at PSG by Gianluigi Donnarumma, but Keylor Navas remains his country’s most vital cog. He’s not getting many club minutes at the moment so could be coming into the tournament cold, but he is a guaranteed starter. Joel Campbell and Bryan Ruiz are still kicking around too at a combined age of 67.
Fixtures
A repeat of their 2014 quarter-final appearances seems unlikely this time around, but stranger things have happened. Progression to the knockout stages would represent a very good World Cup, but if that’s not on the cards, winning a game - as they failed to do in 2018 - is a more achievable goal.

Canada
For the first time since 1986, Canada are back at the World Cup. Their push to Qatar has seen them complete a rapid rise well ahead of schedule, with Canada stunning CONCACAF by finishing atop the World Cup qualifying table ahead of both Mexico and the U.S. Their success, however, wasn't a fluke, with Canada's young stars determined to prove that their country belongs on the biggest stage.
Coach
English-born John Herdman deserves so much credit for what he's done with Candian soccer, having first taken the helm of the women's team before being appointed men's manager in 2018. In the years since, he's helped Canada reach the top of CONCACAF while building a team culture that has been bought into by all of the country's top young stars.
Predicted XI
Alphonso Davies is Canada's first true superstar, and what a player he is. Blessed with incredible pace, Davies has been able to take his game to an even higher level with Bayern Munich, asserting himself as one of the best left-backs in the world. He plays a more attacking role for Canada than he does with Bayern, though, with his country asking him to help lead them to a new level alongside the likes of Jonathan David and Cyle Larin, both reliable goalscorers in top European leagues.
Fixtures
It was a tough draw for Canada, who will face off against two European veterans and a Moroccan team loaded with experienced talent. Getting past both Belgium will be a difficult ask for Canada, who would be extremely happy if they were to somehow push their way into the knockouts

Serbia
Serbia could be one of the true dark horses of the World Cup. Dragan Stojkovic's side breezed through qualification, finishing ahead of Portugal no less, and didn't lose a single game. Having won five of their last six matches in 2022, they're in fine form heading into the Qatar showpiece and in Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic, Serbia possess a deadly strike duo that should cause problems for any opponent, including group rivals Brazil.
Coach
After losing to Scotland in the Euro 2020 play-off on penalties, it was time for change in the Serbia national team set-up. In came Dragan Stojkovic, and what a remarkable impact he's had. The 57-year-old, who had spent his entire coaching career in Asia prior to taking the Serbia job in March 2021, has won an impressive 13 of his 20 matches in charge, losing just three times and successfully steering them to the World Cup.
Predicted XI
Serbia will be looking to their front two to guide them as far as possible in Qatar. In Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic and Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, they have the firepower to trouble any opponent, with the former having scored six times in his last four international appearances. Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is another one to watch and is having a storming season in Serie A.
Fixtures
They may be in the same group as competition favourites Brazil, but Serbia should be taken very seriously. The aim will be to qualify out of Group G with the Selecao, who they were also paired with at World Cup 2018. Cameroon and Switzerland are the other opponents standing in the Balkan nation's way, and for that reason they will be confident of progression. Having failed to get out of the group four years ago - and remember they missed out on Euro 2020 entirely - Serbia will be desperate to make a big impact in Qatar. Who knows how far they could go?

Ghana
The Black Stars are traditionally one of Africa's powerhouses, but they have struggled to live up to their reputation somewhat in recent years. They do have some exciting talents coming through, though, in Mohammed Kudus, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Kamaldeen Sulemana and appear to be on their way back, particularly with a number of high-profile names switching allegiances to represent Ghana at international level.
Coach
Ghana had not been in great form when Addo took over ahead of the decisive World Cup qualification play-offs, but he got the job done by beating Nigeria in dramatic fashion. The inexperienced coach now gets the chance to show what can do at the biggest stage and a strong run in Qatar could give his coaching career a major boost.
Predicted XI
Andre and Jordan Ayew have been leading the way for Ghana for years, but they've got some high-profile support in attack following Inaki Williams' decision to switch allegiances and represent the Black Stars. The Athletic Bilbao forward possesses impressive pace and has an eye for goal to go with it.
Fixtures
Ghana failed to qualify for the 2018 edition of the tournament and will be determined to show the world they do belong at the biggest stage of all. It will not be easy to make it out of the group stages, but that will most certainly be the goal for the Black Stars.

Senegal
Senegal booked their place at the World Cup by beating Egypt on penalties, and their squad is littered with talent from some of the biggest clubs across Europe's top leagues. The AFCON holders failed to advance to the knockout stages at the 2018 World Cup but have every chance of making it through this time.
Coach
Aliou Cisse, the captain from their incredible run at the 2002 World Cup, remains in charge of the Senegal national team and has been in place since 2015. His biggest achievement thus far was, of course, his country's maiden AFCON win in 2021, and after steering his side to back-to-back World Cup appearances, Cisse has been a huge success story for the African nation.
Predicted XI
It's got to be that man Sadio Mane. The Bayern Munich forward is the darling of Senegalese football and his form in Qatar will likely be crucial as to whether his side are capable of reaching the knockout phase. Chelsea duo Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly are also key, while Ismaila Sarr has the ability to light up any game.
Fixtures
The primary aim for Senegal will be to progress from Group A, and they will fancy their chances of causing problems for Qatar and Ecuador in particular. Netherlands should have top spot sewn up but the battle for second is likely to be wide open and, who knows, with Sadio Mane leading the charge they might even repeat their quarter-final heroics from 2002.

USA
After missing out on the 2018 tournament, the USMNT is back at the World Cup with a new generation of young stars. With players that are currently featuring for the likes of Chelsea, Juventus, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund, it's a new era for the U.S., who have used the disappointment of four years ago to build something new. That squad will be among the youngest in Qatar, but also one filled with experience right at the top on the club level.
Coach
Gregg Berhalter stepped in after the 2018 disappointment with U.S. Soccer asking the former national team defender to build a more progressive, posession-based system. During his tenure, he's led the U.S. to Gold Cup and Nations League success while helping them achieve their most important goal: qualifying for a World Cup.
Predicted XI
No player in USMNT history has ever been in the spotlight quite like Christian Pulisic. He's a Champions League winner on the club level and the unquestioned face of this team, with Pulisic reaching heights unmatched by any other American player. He's also one of the only players in the squad to experience what it was like to miss out in 2018, adding that extra layer to a story he'll be eager to write in Qatar. He's only one American star playing at the highest level, though, with the likes of Leeds star Tyler Adams and Juventus regular Weston McKennie anchoring the midfield.
Fixtures
The U.S. face a tough fight to get out of their group, having been paired with England, Wales and Iran. Many will see England as the clear favorites, leaving the other three to battle it out for that second spot. That will be the U.S. aim, a spot in the knockouts, as a young team looks to make a solid showing before hosting the World Cup in 2026.

Mexico
For the seventh consecutive World Cup, Mexico are in the field after once again taking care of business in CONCACAF. El Tri remain a North American powerhouse, even as several familiar faces like Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez and Carlos Vela have fallen out of the picture. Still, Mexico have a squad that can go toe-to-toe with anyone, even if results have been up and down throughout the last few years.
Coach
Mexico's coach is a familiar face for those that follow the game: Gerardo 'Tata' Matino. The former Barcelona and Argentina manger has his critics in Mexico and has frequently found himself on the hot seat, but all will be forgiven if he can help Mexico finally make the run that the country dreams of.
Predicted XI
Guillermo Ochoa already has his place in World Cup lore. He's one of those Streets Won't Forget players that every fan knows will pop up whenever the World Cup rolls around. And here he is again on his way to his fifth World Cup as the goalkeeper remains as influential as ever for El Tri. Mexico's tournament will, however, be defined by their attackers. Hirving Lozano in almost unstoppable on his day and, if Raul Jimenez is healthy, El Tri will have a striker that can get them the goals they need.
Fixtures
Can they finally reach that much-discussed fifth game? Seven straight World Cups have ended in the Round of 16 for El Tri and, every time, the discussion centers around what Mexico need to do to reach that fifth game. First, though, they'll need to escape a somewhat difficult group that features Argentina, Poland and Saudi Arabia.

Denmark
Widely regarded as the most dangerous of dark horses in Qatar, Denmark can also count on the support of many neutrals after their heroics at Euro 2020. The way in which Simon Kjaer and his team-mates responded to Christian Eriksen's on-field cardiac arrest was truly remarkable, with the players somehow getting over their initial shock to embark upon an inspirational run to the semi-finals, where they were undone by England and some questionable officiating.
Coach
Kasper Hjulmand's reign began in rather awkward circumstances, as his predecessor was meant to step down after Euro 2020, only for the tournament to be pushed back for a year because of the pandemic. Consequently, it was Hjulmand at the helm, and that was certainly no bad thing, as he handled the Eriksen situation incredibly well, somehow managing to drag a side still reeling from their team-mate's collapse all the way to the semi-finals.
Predicted XI
Simon Kjaer is not guaranteed to start but the captain's leadership skills will be once again integral to Denmark's hopes of success, while Denmark could do with Kasper Dolberg proving himself capable of scoring goals on the game's grandest stage. However, the focus will, of course, be on Christian Eriksen, who has made a stunning recovery, with the playmaker earning a summer move to Manchester United after resuming his career at Brentford earlier this year. The World Cup might just provide a fairy tale ending to this most dramatic of comeback stories.
Fixtures
The Danes don't really do arrogance but they cannot be anything but quietly confident about their World Cup chances. They may not have the depth of some of the favourites but their starting XI is a match for anybody - as they proved this year by beating France home and away in the Nations League. Indeed, right now, it will be the reigning world champions who will be more worried about meeting Denmark again in Qatar. Indeed, given Australia and Tunisia are the other two sides in Group D, there's no reason why the Scandinavians shouldn't be targeting top spot.

Germany
Germany will not be particularly high on confidence after an underwhelming Euro 2020 performance was followed up with an equally disappointing Nations League campaign. There's no denying Germany have plenty of quality in their ranks, but they will have to step it up a notch in Qatar if they are to have a chance of fulfiling their lofty ambitions.
Coach
Hansi Flick enjoyed plenty of success as Joachim Low's assistant with the national team, while performing equally well with Bayern Munich at club level. He's not quite managed to hit those heights since becoming the main man for Germany, but there's no denying the 57-year-old is one of the best around in the game.
Predicted XI
Joshua Kimmich's versatility is a massive asset for Germany as he seems equally comfortable playing in midfield as he did in defence. Add in the pace and trickery of Leroy Sane up front and Thomas Muller's tendency to produce big moments when it matters most and you know why they are one of the favourites.
Fixtures
The goal is always the same for Germany and that is to win the whole thing. The 2018 World Cup was a massive disappointment after winning it in 2014 and they will be desperate to make amends in Qatar.

İlkay Gündoğan
Ilkay Gundogan has unfinished business in the World Cup after missing out on Germany’s 2014 triumph with a heartbreaking back injury. Since then the Manchester City star has firmly established himself as one of the best midfielders on the planet, racking up no less than four Premier League titles. Flick should have no problem finding a space for the classy Gundogan.
Joshua Kimmich
Kimmich is the glue keeping things together in midfield for both Bayern and Germany. He's disciplined on the ball, equally reliable off it and then contributes going forward with the occasional wondergoal as well. An absolute joy to work with for any coach.
Antonio Rüdiger
Chelsea fans were devastated when Antonio Rudiger left Stamford Bridge in the summer - and it’s not hard to see why. Rudiger is the archetypal modern defender, as comfortable striding out from the back as he is making a crunching sliding tackle. Now with Real Madrid, Rudiger will be at the heart of Hansi Flick’s star-studded defence in Qatar.
Morocco
Having qualified for a first World Cup since way back in 1970, Morocco will be keen to make and impression. They are in a tough group alongside Belgium, Croatia and a potentially dangerous Canada side, but results in the build-up to Qatar have generally been strong and they possess a core of quality players capable of causing an upset.
Coach
Walid Regragui was only appointed at the end of August, replacing the volatile Valhid Halilhodzic. Given he is relatively inexperienced and will have had so little time to implement his ideas before the tournament it will be difficult to judge him, but he wasted little time in recalling Ziyech, who had fallen out with his predecessor.
Predicted XI
Although they perhaps lack a bit of quality in midfield, Morocco boast a core of solid players operating at the very top level - including Sevilla goalkeeper Bounou, PSG's Achraf Hakimi, Noussair Mazraoui of Bayern Munich, Chelsea' wide man Ziyech and striker Youssef En-Nesyri, Bounou's teammate at club level. Hakimi is always exciting to watch when he is able to bomb forward, while Ziyech will be the key attacking outlet if he can find some consistency.
Fixtures
While they are by no means favourites to progress to the last 16, you need only glance at Morocco's squad list to know that they won't be there to make up the numbers. Hakim Ziyech's return to the fold under a new manager is a huge boost and they have the overall quality to sneak the necessary points to qualify.

Switzerland
Now perennial qualifiers for major tournaments, Switzerland head to Qatar with a team packed with experience as well as good recent memories of mixing it with some of the world’s best teams. They have beaten both Spain and Portugal in the last year, qualified ahead of European champions Italy from their group and memorably knocked France out of Euro 2020. Unlikely to be anyone’s favourites, they do have both the ability and knowhow to cause a shock.
Coach
Murat Yakin has been in charge of Switzerland for just over year after Vladimir Petkovic’s seven-year stint as manager came to an end following Euro 2020, and has had mixed results, including those wins over Portugal and Spain. A two-time Swiss title winner from his time in charge of Basel, Yakin has struggled to hold down a club job for more than a year since, but it is hoped the 49-time capped defender is more suited to being in the international dugout.
Predicted XI
Both with over 100 caps to their name, Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka remain the faces of this Swiss generation, and will be expected to lead from the front once more. Behind them, goalkeeper Yann Sommer is a veteran of tournaments past, while centre-back Manuel Akanji has made an encouraging start to life at Manchester City and will be expected to be the leader of the defence. In forward areas, Breel Embolo, has the pace and physicality to be a nightmare proposition for any opposing defenders.
Fixtures
Having reached the last 16 in three of the last four World Cups, the expectations will be that they again make it to the knockout stages. Few will expect them to take anything from their clash with tournament favourites Brazil, so wins over Serbia and Cameroon will be imperative if they are to make it out of Group G.

Uruguay
Uruguay finished third in the one-staged Conmebol qualification process - though they were miles behind both Brazil and Argentina. This reflects the regression they’ve experienced over the past few years as they phase out old stars and attempt to blood fresh talent. Things have seemed to settle down now though, with Uruguay winning seven of their last nine games heading into the tournament.
Coach
When the long-serving Oscar Tabarez departed in 2021 off the back of four straight defeats, Diego Alonso got the call to take over his native Uruguay. Despite an uninspiring recent CV, Alonso has been a success, guiding his side to four wins which secured World Cup qualification and tweaking a few things to get confidence back among the ranks.
Predicted XI
Move aside Luis Suarez, there’s a new sheriff in town. Although they will likely start up front together, Darwin Nunez is now the senior man in this partnership, with Edinson Cavani likely to struggle for minutes. Further back, Federico Valverde was vital in Real Madrid’s Champions League triumph and Rodrigo Bentancur has seriously been catching the eye since joining Tottenham in the summer.
Fixtures
Uruguay should really be making it through the group, with South Korea and Ghana - Luis Suarez should enjoy that one - representing winnable ties. Portugal is a tougher test but they looked far from perfect in the international break. There is enough in this Uruguayan side to trouble anyone, but a quarter-final exit is their most likely outcome.

Netherlands
Oranje have been in fine form since their underwhelming Euro 2020 campaign and haven't lost a single game since their round-of-16 defeat at the hands of Czech Republic. They might no longer be playing the free-flowing attacking football they were once famous for, but are the doing a fine job with the resources at their disposal. Defence is arguably their strongest area these days and Louis van Gaal therefore likes to rely on a five-man defence with attacking wing-backs. Frenkie de Jong adds a bit of flair and creativity in midfield, while the likes of Steven Bergwijn and Memphis Depay have been in fine form while representing the national team.
Coach
Louis van Gaal took charge of Netherlands after an underwhelming Euro 2020 campaign and instantly turned things around during his third spell in charge of the national team. They qualified for Qatar 2022 without any noteworthy problems after a difficult start, while they also impressed during the Uefa Nations League. Van Gaal will be leaving his role after the World Cup to make way for Ronald Koeman and he will be hoping to do so on a high again after his previous successful stint at the 2014 World Cup.
Predicted XI
The Dutch will very much be looking toward Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk to lead by example from the back, with Frenkie de Jong expected to direct play and dictate the pace of the game from the middle of the pitch and Memphis Depay then in charge of the goalscoring side of things up top.
Fixtures
Netherlands traditionally always see themselves as one of the favourites, but expectations are slightly lower this time around. They should cruise through the group stages and then from there on a lot will depend on the draw. A quarter-final spot will be considered an honourable result, but they will always dream of more and going all the way.

Players Deep Dive
Frenkie de Jong
The Barcelona man is one of those players who always seems to deliver for the national team. De Jong has endured a tough time at Camp Nou as the club looked to sell him, but the versatile midfielder opted to stay put and will be keen to use the World Cup to show he remains one of the best around in the game.
Memphis Depay
Memphis might not have the reputation Robin van Persie used to have, but the Barcelona forward is still on his way to dethroning his illustrious predecessor as the country's all-time top goal scorer. Not a guaranteed starter by any means at club level, but one of the first names on the teamsheet for Louis van Gaal still.
Virgil van Dijk
Van Dijk has arguably been the best defender in the world these last few years, even if he's perhaps not quite been at that level yet this season. The Liverpool man is the undisputed leader of the Dutch defence and their strong back-line will be crucial in their attempts to spring a surprise.
Wales
There were wild scenes of celebration in Cardiff when Wales qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1958 with a tense win over Ukraine in June. Perhaps a hangover was inevitable, with the Dragons having performed poorly in the interim. However, Welsh fans will believe that anything is possible with Gareth Bale on the pitch and they will certainly relish a group meeting with England in Qatar.
Coach
Rob Page has worked wonders since taking over from Ryan Giggs, initially on a caretaker basis, in November 2020. After securing promotion to Nations League A, he then led Wales to the last 16 of Euro 2020 before securing a historic World Cup berth after play-off wins over Austria and Ukraine. This is very much a team that is far greater than the sum of its part, and much of the credit for that has to go to Page, who is renowned for his defensive works.
Predicted XI
Neco Williams, Ethan Ampadu and Daniel James should serve their country well for years to come, while Aaron Ramsey somehow seems to always be fit to pull on a Welsh jersey - which is obviously a good thing for Page, given the midfielder can still be a creative force on his day. It's Bale, though, who so often ends up carrying this side with his proven world-class qualities. Say what you will about the winger, and the controversial end to his Real Madrid career, but he always steps up to the mark when Wales needs him, as he underlined yet again by scoring all of their goals in the play-offs.
Fixtures
Wales can certainly dare to dream, given they made the knockout stages of both Euro 2016 and Euro 2020. The draw has also been kind to them, given they'll not only be going up against an out-of-sorts England, but also Iran and USA. A last-16 spot is certainly there for the taking. However, it would be a surprise if they go any further, given they were just relegated from Nations League A after picking up just one point from six games.

Poland
Having last reached the last 16 of a World Cup in 1986, Poland will be determined to set the record straight in Qatar - and they will be quietly confident of doing so. However, the Poles were left in the lurch when previous manager Paulo Sousa quit suddenly ahead of the qualifying playoffs, and although they beat Sweden to secure their place at the showpiece, results have been mixed since - including an alarming 6-1 defeat to Belgium in the summer. Nevertheless, in Robert Lewandowksi they have a striker capable of winning matches singlehandedly. This will likely be his last chance on world football's biggest stage.
Coach
Czeslaw Michniewicz was a controversial appointment due to links to a convicted match fixer, and results haven't exactly been outstanding to this point. It's conceivable that his job could already be on the line if Poland do not improve on disappointing showings at the 2018 edition and Euro 2020. The jury is out at this stage.
Predicted XI
Everyone knows all about Lewandowski. He is the main man and will be expected to produce. Away from him, though, two Serie A stars will be hoping to shine. Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski is an outstanding midfield operator and is in fine form, while young Roma wide man Nicola Zalewski is a hugely exciting talent. Lewandowski's understudy Arkadiusz Milik has also made a good start to life at Juventus, but it remains to be seen how many opportunities he'll be afforded.
Fixtures
Drawn alongside Argentina, Mexico and Saudi Arabia in Group C, Poland will fancy their chances of snaring second place and ending that 26-year hoodoo. Much will depend on their opening game against the Mexicans - and whether they can give a better account of themselves than their pre-tournament form suggests they will. There is certainly the quality in the squad to reach the last 16.

Tunisia
If you are looking for excitement from this year’s World Cup, then Tunisia’s matches might not be the best place to start. Eight of their 13 matches in 2022 have finished either 1-0 or 0-0, and though they do have a difficult defence to break down, going forward they are lacking somewhat. They began the year by reaching the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations and Qatar marks their fifth World Cup qualification in the last seven, but they are more efficient than exhilarating.
Coach
Jalel Khadri stepped up to become Tunisia’s manager following their AFCON exit in January, having previously been Mondher Kebaier’s assistant coach since the summer of 2021. He has over 20 years of coaching experience, exclusively at club sides in Asia and northern Africa, and so it remains to be seen how he will cope when head-to-head with some of Europe’s best tactical minds.
Predicted XI
Tunisia’s is a not squad packed with household names, with forward Wahbi Khazri one of the few to have ever played regularly in one of Europe’s top-five leagues. He will be joined in attack by captain Youssef Msakni, who will be keen to fire having missed out on the 2018 World Cup with a knee injury and who is on familiar soil having spent the majority of his career playing club football in Qatar. Manchester United fans will be hopeful of seeing teenage midfielder Hannibal Mejbri in action, too.
Fixtures
Tunisia have never made it out of the group stages at a World Cup, and that is unlikely to change this time around, with European heavyweights France and Denmark likely to be far too strong in Group D. Instead, they are set to be battling with Australia to avoid a fourth-placed finish.

Japan
The Samurai Blue face an uphill battle to match their best-ever performance at a World Cup by reaching the last 16: Their group includes Spain and Germany. Hajime Moriyasu's men will certainly have to find some consistency to do so. There is a mix of youth and experience in the squad, with particular quality and competition in midfield.
Coach
Promoted to head coach after the 2018 World Cup, Moriyasu's job was in jeopardy a year ago when Japan made a bad start to qualifying for 2022. However, he's turned things around despite some underwhelming results, and will hope his side can cause an upset in Qatar.
Predicted XI
Japan's midfield and forward areas are loaded with talent. Winger Takefusa Kubo has shown his best form since leaving Real Madrid for Real Sociedad, while the versatile Daichi Kamada arrives at the World Cup as a Europa League winner with Frankfurt. Wataru Endo will be a key cog at the base of midfield, anchoring the team with his tackling and eye for a pass.
Fixtures
It would be unreasonable to expect Japan to reach the round of 16 in what is a tough group on paper, but the task is not beyond them - especially with Germany and Spain not at their respective peaks. However, while Costa Rica will be no pushovers, a third-placed finish in the group seems the most likely outcome.

Maya Yoshida
A vastly experienced campaigner at the back, Yoshida is currently plying his trade with Schalke in the Bundesliga. Although the German club are struggling, the centre-back is still a key member of the Japan squad and will captain the side in Qatar. The no-nonsense defender's experience could be crucial as Japan look to push out of the group and beyond the last 16.
Wataru Endo
Another Bundesliga star, Endo has established himself in the German top flight as a solid defensive midfield anchor over the past couple of years - reflected in his league-high 476 tackles last season. However, he's added unexpected goals to his game in the build-up to the World Cup and his versatility will give his manager plenty of flexibility in the middle of the park. A born leader, he has worn the armband for both club and country.
Junya Ito
Ito finally made the move to one of Europe's top league's in the summer aged 29 when he joined Stade Reims in Ligue 1, and he has hit the ground running. Nominally a winger, he has been played in a central role and chipped in with four goals and an assist in his ten appearances so far. Lightning fast with excellent dribbling ability, Ito will pose a significant threat even if bigger names command the spotlight.
Croatia
Croatia's run to the final of the 2018 World Cup may have been unexpected, but that didn't make defeat any less devastating. Indeed, there was a feeling that the nation's 'Golden Generation' had missed its final shot at immortality. However, over the past year, Luka Modric & Co. have reminded everyone of their enduring quality by topping a Nations League group containing France and Denmark. They may not be among the favourites but Croatia are once again a dark horse for the title.
Coach
It might seem hard to believe now but Zlatko Dalic was under severe pressure at the end of 2020, after heavy defeats to Portugal and France. However, the man who led Croatia to the final of the 2018 World Cup has not only steadied the ship, but also got his team right back on course.
Predicted XI
Modric is obviously key to Croatia's hopes. The man is 37 years of age yet he's still wowing audiences on a weekly basis at Real Madrid. What's more, he is very ably supported in midfield by Mateo Kovacic and the fantastic Marcelo Brozovic, who does the work of three players. It will also be worth keeping an eye on Josko Gvardial, the 20-year-old RB Leipzig defender who is destined to join one of Europe's elite clubs sooner rather than later.
Fixtures
Croatia will be cautiously optimistic of doing some damage in Qatar. Their squad is not as strong as 2018, with the likes of Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Rakitic having long since retired, while Luka Modric, Ivan Perisic, Domagoj Vida and Dejan Lovren are all well over 30, but they will arrive in Qatar buoyed by a four-game winning streak that includes a win over France in Paris. Croatia's group is by no means straightforward but they should end up battling Belgium for top spot. Obviously, it's hardly ideal that they'd likely face either Germany or Spain the last 16, but as we saw at Russia 2018, Croatia revel in the role of underdogs.

Cameroon
Cameroon will be dreaming of a place in the knockout stages. They have lost twice already to Brazil in World Cup finals, but will be targeting victories over Serbia and Switzerland. There is enough talent in the squad to progress, but going any further than the round of 16 seems like a pipedream.
Coach
Rigobert Song is a legendary figure in Cameroon, having picked up a record 137 caps for his country during a storied career. After several years in the coaching setup he was tasked with guiding Cameroon through the playoffs - which he did successfully. He has plenty of good will and defying expectations in Qatar would see him welcomed home as a god.
Predicted XI
If Cameroon do progress, Inter shot-shopper Andre Onana is likely to have a big hand in their success. The goalkeeper has displaced the long-serving Samir Handonovic at San Siro this season and he will likely be busy with Cameroon missing a top-class centre-back. Further up the field, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa provides energy and progression while Vincent Aboubakar top-scored at AFCON.
Fixtures
Cameroon earned their place at the World Cup by beating heavily-fancied Algeria over two legs, so they must be taken seriously. The Indomitable Lions - great nickname, by the way - also fared well in the 2021 AFCON, which they hosted, reaching the semi-finals where they lost to Mohamed Salah’s Egypt on penalties.

South Korea
At their 10th successive World Cup, South Korea arrive as the team from Asia that most believe have the best chance of leaving a lasting impression on the tournament. Their form in 2022 has not been great, but they have the individual talent to give any side a game and have been drawn into a group that is not overly daunting. A deep run to match their fourth-place finish on home soil in 2002 is highly unlikely, but they are not a team to be written off.
Coach
Paulo Bento does not have fond memories of the World Cup, having been the man in charge of his native Portugal when they embarrassingly exited the 2014 competition in the group stages. He will be hoping for much better this time around, then, and has done a solid job in his four years in charge of South Korea, though this tournament will be the deciding factor on whether his overall tenure has been a success or failure.
Predicted XI
All eyes will be on Son Heung-min whenever South Korea take to the field in Qatar, with last season’s Premier League Golden Boot winner expected to be the talisman as Asia’s best and most famous current footballer. He is set to be joined in attack by fellow Premier League forward, Wolves’ Hwang Hee-chan, while in defence there will be plenty of scouts keeping an eye on Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae. Watch out, too, for playmaker Lee Kang-in, who was the Player of the Tournament at the U20 World Cup in 2019 and has the ability to open up any defence.
Fixtures
Having contributed to knocking Germany out in the 2018 group stages, the Taeguk Warriors will be out to cause more surprises when they take on Portugal, Uruguay and Ghana in Group H. Few will expect them to make it through into the knockout rounds, but there are some flawed teams in that group, and it will not take much for South Korea to get a surprise result or two.
